Trends, Timelines, and Doing Your Own Thing

Lately I’ve been seeing the “Mom, what were you like in the 90s?” trend popping up everywhere online.

Old photos, big hair, oversized jackets, cameras that look almost antique now. It’s a fun little time capsule, and I genuinely enjoy seeing people share those snapshots of their younger selves.

But watching the trend unfold also made me think about something else.

Not just the photos.

The way trends work.

It’s fascinating how quickly something spreads online. One minute nobody is doing it, and the next minute your entire feed is filled with the same idea. It’s like a quiet current that suddenly sweeps everyone in the same direction.

And if I’m being honest, I’ve realized over the years that I might be wired a little differently when it comes to trends.

The moment something becomes really trendy and suddenly everyone seems to be doing the same thing… part of me instinctively wants to go the other way.

Not in a rebellious way exactly. Just in a “I’d rather do what feels like me” kind of way.

I’ve been known to keep clothes and boots for 15+ years and continue wearing them simply because I like them. Faux fur. Leopard print. Boots that have been with me through multiple phases of life.

Half the time, if you keep something long enough, it eventually circles back around and becomes “in style” again anyway.

Not that I really notice or pay much attention to that part.

I think what I’ve come to appreciate over time is individuality. The quiet confidence of people who simply do their own thing without worrying too much about whether it fits the moment.

That kind of energy is timeless.

Ironically, the one thing I have been spending a lot of time on lately might be considered a bit “on trend” in its own way — building and refining the online shop.

The world has shifted so much toward digital spaces, and I’ve been slowly shaping the website to reflect the heart of the store here on Water Street.

It’s still growing and evolving, much like the shop itself always has.

If you ever feel like wandering through it, you can explore it here:

And if the 90s trend has you reflecting on your own timeline, I think the more interesting question might be this:

What’s something about you that has stayed the same no matter what the trends were?

Sometimes the things that last the longest are the things that were never trying to follow the crowd in the first place.
